A Passion for Fashion Lands M.E.F. Productions in Sunny Miami!

  • Posted on Jul 10, 2018

May 2011, I met my friends Martu Freeman Parker and Danielle Taylor at a New York diner for dinner after a long day’s work. At the time, both Martu and Danielle worked in the New York fashion industry and I worked in television. Our conversation, which lasted hours, consisted of reminiscing and sharing our dreams. We were all on a mission…a mission to do what we love.

Fast forward to Summer 2018…. and here we are. Danielle is an extremely talented fashion stylist, lending her talents on major network television shows, I’ve developed MoMedia, LLC, and Martu launched a phenomenal fashion brand, M.E.F. Productions. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Martu, while visiting Miami a few weeks ago, and out of nowhere Martu reminded me of the conversation we had that evening in New York. All these years, I had forgotten about our conversation, when we casually spoke our dreams into fruition.

Thank you Martu for reminding me of the power of speaking what we desire into fruition, and thank you for sharing your story with our readers. Everyone, meet my talented and equally passionate friend, Founder, Martu Freeman Parker, who created M.E.F. Productions to help propel fashion designers into building their brands. Enjoy the read and don’t forget to do that thing you’ve been wanting to do!

1.M.E.F. Productions LLC business concept is a quite unique. How did it derive?

I entered the Fashion industry in 1997, by December 1999 M.E.F. Productions was created. M.E.F. Productions LLC, derived from a void I saw in the fashion industry early in my career. I worked with designers all day and realized sourcing and production resources were as foreign for them as it was the rest of the world. I worked on the production team or sourcing team at many of my jobs. So I knew local, national and international suppliers. I started offering my sourcing and production services to designers and it was a hit. I never advertised my services, it was all word of mouth. I received referrals after referrals. I would help designers start or finish their own collections and/or projects.

2. When did you know fashion was in your blood?

I knew fashion was in my blood as early as 7 or 8 years old. I loved fabrics…sewing and drawing was all I wanted to do. I never stopped wanting to do these things, I loved to create and still do!

3. Tell us about your two-part fashion-designing course.

M.E.F. Productions offers a workshop every month: How to Launch a Fashion Business: A 2-hour workshop of tools and resources on how to start and launch your fashion business. After attendees take the workshop I offer them a 6 weeks program called: Design to Win.

Design to Win is a Six Week Design Business Workshop for serious aspiring fashion designers. The designer will go through an intense step-by-step business development and design coaching to create and develop their very own fashion line. We meet once a week for a 2-hour session, in addition, we also conduct a weekly 30-minute progress call.

4. Who are your favorite designers?

My favorite designers are Alexander McQueen, Vivienna Westwood and Ralph Lauren

5. What is your dream fashion collaboration?

My dream fashion collaboration is a Luxury Menswear collection for Nas.

6. What advice would you offer aspiring fashion designers?

It’s important to know your talent and be true to it. Do not let anyone tell you who you are and what you are worth. You start and end that conversation.

7. Why did you select Miami as the home for M.E.F. Productions?

I was starting the next chapter of my life and wanted a fresh start. Miami was on my radar for  for a couple of years and I had family and friends already living here. I just knew in my gut this had to happen. It was the right place to raise my son and grow my business.

8. How do you balance motherhood and your career?

Balancing motherhood and my career is definitely a team effort. My husband and mother help out a lot.  When I decided to follow my dream, I quickly realized Faith, Family, and Fashion was the order for my life.

9. Why is the Art of Fashion important to you?

The Art of Fashion is important to me because I believe fashion is one of the greatest keepers of time. Fashion speaks without words. It is more than clothes; I believe it’s more emotional than it is physical. The Art of Fashion intrigues me, and I love learning more and using what I’ve learned to help others grow their businesses.

10. Where do you want to see your business in 5 years?

I want to see M.E.F. Productions LLC, as a house for small luxury brands I create. I would also like to expand the teaching component of my business through providing online training opportunities to reach talent worldwide.

11. What are your favorite mantras?

My favorite mantras are “Play to Win” and “Faith, Family and Fashion!”
